BritOz ePals

Linking the next generation

BritOz ePals is a completely new bi-lateral initiative intended to develop dynamic partnerships between schools and their pupils in Australia and Britain.

Designed to enliven and sustain the historic but ever-changing ties between the two countries by direct and personal communication, the BritOz ePals scheme aims to encourage school children in Australia and Britain to actively seek an e-mail a pen friend.

Established as an initiative of the Britain-Australia Society and with the support of the UK and Australian Governments and always under the control and guidance of their teachers, BritOz ePals is initially directed at the 7-14 age group.

Objectives

Through regular pen pal contact via email, the intention is to provide a stimulating new tool to:

  • aid, develop and improve computing, language and literacy skills
  • learn something of the history, culture and values of each other's country, in a more informal way
  • Establish lines of communication and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Future developments

Computing is a curriculum subject in both countries. In addition to developing the pen-pal aspect of the scheme, it is anticipated that teachers in Partner Schools will initiate joint projects associated with the BritOz ePals objective of greater understanding through skilled and imaginative communication.

To encourage such projects the BritOz ePals initiative has established an award scheme for both individual students and schools.

Assistance

The BritOz ePals Secretariat:

  • supports the implementation of the scheme
  • provides back-up
  • stringently supervise all necessary security checks and, if required,
  • offers assistance in putting schools interested in establishing an ePals Partnership in touch with one another.
