VALE His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

Dear Members and Friends,

We are all aware of the passing of our Patron, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and the many tributes that have already been offered. I arrived in Sydney over the weekend and my quarantine solitude is giving me the opportunity to absorb the many obituaries published on the life and wonderful achievements of this outstanding man. I particularly enjoyed reading the obituary in The Times. However all noted his “hard work", his “loyalty, determination, stoicism” and there were many mentions, of course, of his sometimes cutting wit. Here in Australia, this historic moment is the central theme across all of the media and his 20 visits to Australia, with and without the Queen, are highlighted.

Prince Philip’s many trips to Australia underlie his long and consistent support for the Britain-Australia Society and, even earlier, his support for our foundation organisation, the Australia Club. In 1971, when the Australia Club was reconstituted as the Australia Society (which later changed its name to the Britain-Australia Society), Prince Philip gladly accepted the appointment as its Patron and he actively held that position for the rest of his life. In April 2017, at the age of 95, he presented the Britain-Australia Society Award to Ms Kylie Minogue, followed by an event at Australia House. In only very recent weeks did we exchange correspondence about the Gala event we still hope to hold in October to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Members and friends will quickly understand that this is also the 50th anniversary of Prince Philip’s patronage of the Britain-Australia Society. It is in that context that I write to you with great sadness to mark the passing of our first and only Patron, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Our heartfelt condolences go to Her Majesty The Queen and her family.

Yours sincerely,

Damian J. Walsh
