October 2020 Newsletter

Dear Members and Friends,

As you will have seen, many exciting things have happened in the BAS office since our last newsletter.

Many of you will have joined me in our joint event with the Australian British Chamber of Commerce - The High Commissioners in Conversation. Over 250 people logged in from around the world, including many members of parliament and the diplomatic services in both Australia and Britain. For those of you who may have missed this, the recording is available in the members' area of our website.

I am delighted to announce that Dr David Headon of the ANU will once again give generously of his time to deliver the third in the series of his highly successful First Eight Lectures - focussing on the life and times of Australia's second Prime Minister; Alfred Deakin. Deakin has been described as "the ideal Australian statesman". The lecture will take place via Zoom on the evening of 22 October 2020. We are delighted the High Commissioner of Australia, HE The Hon. George Brandis QC, has once again agreed to introduce this year's lecture which has been generously sponsored by our corporate partner, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Following the success of our last giveaway, we are also delighted to be able to offer Members the chance to win another wonderful new book, this time an enchanting children's story following the adventures of the famous explorer Captain Matthew Flinders and his ship cat, Trim.

For full details please refer to our monthly email.
